Writing here on The Yard of Ale I feel it would be impolite not to share with you my own yard of ale drinking feat. It was in the beautiful town of Timisoara at the start of a peregrination that would take me from Romania through Serbia and Hungary, ending in Ukraine. I checked my wallet halfway through to find banknotes from six national banks. I was traveling with three friends; a ragtag bunch of chaps, mostly strangers to fashion and style but handpicked for their love of adventure and extraordinary drinking ability.

At this point in the story I must remind readers of The Yard’s disclaimer regarding drinking responsibly. We at the Yard are seasoned professionals and reports of our exploits are for your delight and entertainment only and should not be replicated.

Things started well with my bibulous brothers as we sampled every beer and bar that would let us in. Delicious local beer clocked in at around £1.20 a pint. The penultimate bar only sold beer in litre glasses and it was suggested that I might not be able to down a whole jar in one go. Despite being unprepared and already around a gallon of beer for the better I accepted the challenge. With years of experience, skill and determination at my fingertips, I took a deep breath and necked the lot in one fell swoop. The last drop disappearing to roars of encouragement. To congratulate me the chaps bought me another beer! Thoughtful.

To be fair , it wasn’t an official yard of ale in measure (only a mere litre) but as no one else would try it I am taking the credit.

If you want to know what happened in the last bar we stumbled into, well for some strange reason I cannot recall.
